The Vatican Library’s Innovative Use of NFTs and Web3 Technology

The Vatican Library has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to expand its digital reach through the utilization of Web3 technology. This project involves granting non-transferable NFTs to supporters of its manuscript collections, marking a significant shift towards modernization and accessibility. While currently in an “experimental” phase, the project is exclusive to Italian backers of the Vatican Apostolic Library. By sharing the NFT project on social media until July 16, Italians can receive a “Silver NFT” and gain access to a selection of 15 manuscripts in high-resolution images. Furthermore, those who provide financial support will be rewarded with a “Gold NFT” and access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the special collection.

In order to propel this Web3 initiative forward, the Vatican Library has joined forces with NTT DATA, a renowned Japanese technology company. Together, they aim to leverage the advancements of Web3 to connect with supporters and enhance public access to the library’s priceless artefacts. NTT DATA, known for its commitment to investing in Web3 infrastructure, is set to launch a crypto wallet through one of its subsidiaries by the end of 2024. This collaboration signifies a bold step towards embracing the future while preserving the rich history of the Vatican Library.

Salesian Father Mauro Mantovani, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, expressed the importance of preserving and promoting the institution’s heritage. He emphasized the crucial role played by NTT DATA in supporting the library’s mission to make its unique collections accessible to the public regardless of background or beliefs. With approximately 180,000 manuscripts and 1.5 million printed books, the Vatican Library stands as a bastion of history and knowledge, dating back to the 4th century.

The Vatican Library’s foray into Web3 technology is part of its ongoing mission to modernize and enhance public outreach. In 2020, the library launched a revamped website with improved search functionalities and streamlined access to digitized treasures. Visitors to the website can explore high-resolution reproductions of manuscripts, archival materials, coins, medals, and incunabula, offering a glimpse into the rich and diverse collections housed within the Apostolic Library.

The Vatican Library’s innovative use of NFTs and Web3 technology highlights its commitment to adapt to the digital age while preserving the legacy of centuries past. As it continues to forge ahead with its modernization efforts, the library remains dedicated to making its invaluable resources accessible to a global audience, ushering in a new era of digital engagement and exploration.
