In March 2024, the blockchain security firm PeckShield released a report that highlighted a troubling trend in the crypto space. Despite an overall improvement in investor sentiment, the report revealed that there were over 30 incidents of crypto hacks during the month, resulting in approximately $187.29 million in losses. This surge in hacks has raised concerns about the security of digital assets and the impact on the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector.
While the losses from these incidents are significant, there is some positive news to be found. During the same period, there was a recovery of almost $99 million, providing some relief to the affected projects and investors. This recovery represents a 48% decrease from the previous month, showing that efforts to mitigate the impact of hacks are underway in the crypto community.
One of the most devastating breaches in March 2024 occurred on Munchables, a Web3 gaming protocol on the Blast network. The exploit resulted in losses of $97 million, making it the top incident in terms of financial impact. Surprisingly, the hacker responsible for the breach returned the funds voluntarily, without any ransom demands. It was later revealed that the hacker, known as “Werewolves0493” on GitHub, was actually an insider who shared the private keys with the project team.
Another significant incident involved the smart contract exploit of the real-world asset (RWA) liquidity firm Curio Network, which suffered $40 million in losses. This breach was attributed to a flaw in the voting power privilege access control. Additionally, PeckShield’s report highlighted the hack of the DeFi protocol Prisma Finance, with losses amounting to almost $11.6 million. The platform is currently in negotiations to address the breach and recover the funds.
The series of hacks and security breaches in March 2024 serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with investing in crypto assets. As the industry continues to evolve and innovate, it is crucial for projects and investors to prioritize security measures and proactively address vulnerabilities. By learning from past incidents and implementing robust security protocols, the crypto community can work towards a more secure and resilient ecosystem for digital assets.
