Binance CEO, Richard Teng, has recently spoken out against the Nigerian government’s treatment of Tigran Gambaryan, an American executive of the exchange who has been detained since February. Teng condemned the harsh actions taken against Gambaryan in a post on X, emphasizing the need for him to be allowed to go home for medical treatment and to be with his family.
The viral video that surfaced depicting Gambaryan struggling to enter a courtroom in Abuja on September 2nd highlights the severity of the situation. Despite his obvious physical discomfort and request for a wheelchair, prison authorities callously denied his pleas, leaving him to drag his injured leg behind him. Even when he attempted to seek assistance from a correctional officer, his efforts were met with resistance, forcing him to rely on a single crutch for support.
Gambaryan’s family has been vocal about the deteriorating state of his health while in Nigerian custody, and the video evidence only serves to validate their claims. His legal team recently filed a bail application on medical grounds, citing various health complications such as malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and a herniated disc that have caused him immense pain and limited mobility. Despite these urgent pleas for medical attention, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria has opposed the bail request, arguing that Gambaryan’s health is not a cause for concern.
A Plea for Justice
As Gambaryan’s case continues to unfold, it is crucial for the authorities to prioritize his well-being and grant him the necessary medical treatment he so desperately needs. The judge’s decision to allow him the use of a wheelchair is a small step in the right direction, but more substantial actions must be taken to ensure that justice is served and that his rights as a human being are upheld. It is imperative that the inhumane treatment of individuals like Tigran Gambaryan does not go unnoticed or unchallenged, as it reflects a grave violation of basic human rights and dignity.
